Is Spray Foam Insulation Safe?

Spray foam is safe once fully cured, but installation and ventilation matter.

During installation

Curing foam releases isocyanates and other chemicals. Professional installers wear respirators and ventilate the area. Homeowners and pets should stay out during application and for the recommended re-occupancy period (usually 24 hours).

Once cured

Properly installed, fully cured spray foam is inert and does not off-gas in normal conditions. It’s used in millions of American homes.

Safety tips

  • Use licensed, SPFA-affiliated contractors who follow correct ratios and cure times
  • Ensure good ventilation during and after application
  • Avoid DIY on large jobs where mixing errors cause poor curing
  • Keep foam away from heat sources and recessed lighting unless rated

Bottom line: correctly installed spray foam is safe. Most issues come from poor application, not the material.
