Spray Foam vs Fiberglass vs Mineral Wool
Choosing insulation means weighing performance, cost, and installation. Here’s how the three most common US options compare.
Spray foam
Best airtightness, seals gaps, high R-value (especially closed-cell). More expensive and needs professional installation.
Fiberglass
Cheapest and DIY-friendly. Lower R-value per inch, doesn’t seal air leaks, and can sag or lose performance if it gets wet.
Mineral wool (rock wool)
Better fire resistance and soundproofing than fiberglass, moisture-resistant, but heavier and pricier. Still doesn’t air-seal like spray foam.
Quick comparison
- Best air sealing: Spray foam
- Best value: Fiberglass
- Best fire/sound: Mineral wool
- Best overall performance: Closed-cell spray foam
