HandiFoam FR (HFO) II-200 and II-600
The most completely documented product in this entire category.
The claim, in the maker's words
"Low pressure, medium density, two-component spray polyurethane foam ... Conforms to the requirements of ASTM E84 as a Class 1 (A) system." Nothing on this page was sprayed or tested by us. Every figure names the document or listing it came from, and where the maker publishes nothing the row says so rather than staying blank.
What HandiFoam states, and on what basis
| Kit sizes | II-200 (201 board feet) and II-600 (601 board feet) disposable kits; refillable systems from 8 to 120 gallons |
|---|---|
| Stated yield | 201 and 601 board feet"Yield is based on free-rise density ... Applying foam into a cavity may result in higher in-place densities due to packing effects. These higher densities may result in lower yields." |
| R-value | R-7.0 initial and R-6.4 aged 180 days at 75 F, both at 1 inASTM C518, initial and aged values both printedTwo results at the same thickness, one initial and one aged 180 days at 75 F. The aged figure is the one to plan with, and the pair is here because the sheet prints both. |
| Fire | Class A: ASTM E84 flame spread 10, smoke developed 350, tested at 2 in; CAN/ULC-S102 at 4 in beads FSI 15, SDI 75; ICC-ES ESR-2717 |
| Density | 1.75 lb/ft3 free rise, 2.10 in place; closed-cell content over 90 percent |
| Vapor | 0.9 perm at 1 in, which the sheet itself calls a Class II vapor retarder |
| Cure | Tack-free 15 to 30 seconds; occupants can re-enter one hour after spraying once the area is ventilated (operating instructions A16600) |
| Hose | Disposable kit hose; length not stated on the sheet |
| Reuse | Shelf life 12 months; use the contents within 30 days of first use, dispensing a little at least every 3 days (operating instructions A16600) |
| Protective equipment | "Certified respiratory protection or a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR)," glasses with side shields or goggles, nitrile gloves, protective clothing; "FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY" |
| Who the maker says it is for | "For professional use only," printed on the sheet |
Our reading
The most completely documented product in this entire category. It prints an initial and an aged R-value with the test named, both surface-burning indices with the tested thickness, a code evaluation report number and a yield definition that explains why in-place foam yields less. DuPont’s Product Information Sheet matches it on the R-value test and the report number; only HandiFoam’s sheets print the surface-burning indices. It also says, in capitals, that it is for professional use only, and it names a PAPR. That is the honest version of what a two-component kit is.

Can the HandiFoam FR (HFO) be left exposed? From the records
Not as a general rule, whatever its fire class. The 2021 IRC asks for a thermal barrier between foam plastic and the interior of the building, and a Class A surface-burning result is not that barrier. The code carries narrow exceptions that depend on the exact product and the assembly: an ignition barrier instead of a thermal barrier in attics and crawl spaces entered only to service utilities (R316.5.3 and R316.5.4), and the sill plate and header exception (R316.5.11) where installed thickness, density and both surface-burning indices meet its limits. Whether this kit qualifies for one is a question for its own documents and your local authority.
A Class A surface-burning result does not let the foam stay bare. The 2021 IRC asks for a thermal barrier between foam plastic and the interior of the building, with a narrower ignition barrier rule for attics and crawl spaces entered only to service utilities, and the band joist is a third case with numeric limits of its own. The hub page sets out which rule applies where. Read the rating method and our editorial policy.
HandiFoam has a right of reply
Everything on this page is a dated reading of documents that can change. If you make or sell this product, or you have read something here that is wrong, send the document. Every submission is read against the record; where it changes the record, the change is dated on the page, and where it does not, the reply says why. A submission cannot buy a position or remove a finding the documents still support, and what moves a record is written down.
