Stanley F903 Black Foam can

Stanley F903 Black Foam

4 of 4 confirmed$26.992 x 12 oz

The one sheet that prints "safe for plants and fishes"; no test named; 200+ bought a month.

Black foam is a color and a use, not a specification. The cans on this page are sold for ponds, waterfalls, rockwork and exteriors, so the questions that matter are whether the maker states water contact, whether it says anything about plants and fish, and what it says about sunlight. On that last point read every sheet twice: several claim UV resistance from the color, which is a relative claim about the pigment, and also advise painting the cured foam because UV discolors it, which is about long-term exposure. Both can be true of one foam; what no sheet here gives is an exposure test with a method and a duration.

Black hides the foam. It does not waterproof it, insulate with it, or rate it.

Every maker here that publishes a sheet but one also tells you to protect the cured foam from sunlight; DAP says its black foam will not break down or discolor in sunlight. The color is otherwise for appearance. Water contact, fish safety and any fire figure come from the document. Stanley and DAP print a plant and fish statement, and Kraken Bond's straw sheet says the foam does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life; none of the three names a test.

How this page is ordered

Four things we could confirm, and nothing we could not

  • Brand data sheetA technical data sheet published by the maker for this product. A safety data sheet or a web page is recorded but does not earn the mark, and where a sheet carries no date or revision the record says so.
  • Claim checkableFor a black foam, "claim traceable" means water contact or UV behavior is stated in a dated data sheet. A listing that says waterproof is not a document.
  • Brand-channel sellerThe Amazon seller of record is the brand or a storefront that carries only that brand in our intake. A multi-brand reseller or an unbranded trading company does not earn it.
  • 100 or more ratingsOn the listing we link. A feedback base, not a verdict; how we read reviews is a separate guide.

Products are ordered by how many of four things we could confirm, then by the size of the buyer-feedback base: a dated technical data sheet from the brand, a category claim you can check against a figure in a dated document, a marketplace seller that is the brand or its single-brand distributor, and at least 100 ratings on the listing we link. This is not a performance score. Nothing on this page was applied or tested by us.

At a glance

7 black / landscape products, in evidence order

The number in the first column is a position, not a score: products with more of the four things confirmed come first, and ties are broken by how many people have rated the product. Under each heading is how many products on this page cleared that test. A circle means we looked and it was not there. Prices are the October 29, 2026 snapshot for the cheapest bare-can listing we hold; ratings were read October 29, 2026. Prices are snapshots, each dated where it appears, not live figures, so check the seller before you pay. Tap a name for the full record.

Desk note

The most complete black foam sheet by figures, yield, expansion and conductivity with their methods, and the oldest document in the entire intake at January 2017. Old is not wrong, but a 2017 sheet on a 2026 listing is a question to ask. The claim, in the seller's words

"High-grade waterproof foam ideal for sealing ponds, waterfalls, and outdoor water features." The gun version is described as "UL classified black spray foam insulation."

sprayman.co product pages, read September 8, 2026

What the documents state

WaterThe store says "high-grade waterproof foam ideal for sealing ponds, waterfalls." The sheet lists "Pond, pool and piscine applications." and says "mildew and water resistant". Water resistant and waterproof are not the same claim, and a pond is where the difference shows. Pond use and fish or plant safety are two separate claims: both channels make the first, and neither makes the secondBrand store against the TDS
UVThe sheet says the black color gives better UV resistance than standard foams, and says cured foam will discolor under ultraviolet light and should be painted or coated for outdoor work. The first is a relative claim about the pigment, the second is about long-term exposure, and no exposure test or duration is printed for eitherTDS, undated
Working rangeApplication 21 to 86 F (-6 to 30 C) ambient and surface; can at 41 to 86 F (5 to 30 C), 68 F (20 C) optimal; cured foam -40 to 176 F (-40 to 80 C). The sheet supplied for this can is the metric one, so a US buyer gets CelsiusTDS, undated

Sizes12 oz straw, 1 to 48 packs; 24 oz gun, 1 to 12, with or without gunStore and listings

Desk note

This can is sold for ponds and waterfalls, and the maker's sheet lists "Pond, pool and piscine applications" without using the word waterfall. It says mildew and water resistant, which is a weaker claim than the waterproof on the store page, and the gap between those two words is the whole question when the foam is going under water. Pond use is one claim and fish or plant safety is another: the store makes the first, and neither the store nor the sheet makes the second. The UV lines are two claims as well: the sheet says the black color resists sun better than a standard foam, which is about the pigment, and says the cured foam will discolor under ultraviolet light and should be painted for outdoor work, which is about long-term exposure. Both can be true, no exposure test is printed for either, and only the first half reaches the store. The sheet is also the metric one, so the figures a US buyer gets are in Celsius. Separately: 202 ratings and a "100+ bought" badge on the straw can, the 24 oz gun listings had no price on September 7, and the 48-can straw listing changed its title to a single can by September 8, which is a reminder that pack sizes on an ASIN move.

  • The sheet carries no date or revision.
  • The store says waterproof; the sheet says water resistant while listing pond and pool use. Neither makes a fish or plant statement.
  • "UL classified black spray foam insulation" on the gun page has no category or file number and does not appear on the sheet.
  • Pack size on the anchor ASIN changed between September 7 and 8.

The claim, in the seller's words

Working rangeStraw 41 to 86 F; gun 21 to 86 FTDS

Desk note

The most-bought black foam in the set, 336 ratings on the single straw can and a "300+ bought in past month" badge on the 2 x 24 oz gun pack on September 8, with sheets for both cans. Read the sheets slowly. The straw sheet calls the foam high expansion in its table and low expansion in a bullet, and that is a real conflict on one page. The UV lines are not: the gun sheet headlines "UV resistant", which is a relative claim about the pigment, and both sheets then say the cured foam discolors under UV and should be painted outdoors, which is about long-term exposure. Both can be true; what neither sheet gives is an exposure test with a duration. The straw sheet also says the cured foam "does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life above or below the waterline", with no test named, which is the maker's word and nothing more.

  • Expansion stated two ways on the straw sheet.
  • No UV exposure test, method or duration behind either the UV resistant heading or the coating instruction.
  • No test named behind the aquatic and terrestrial life sentence on the straw sheet.

The claim, in the seller's words

Straw sheet: "suitable for applications in contact with water and does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life above or below the waterline." Gun sheet: "Cured foam is safe for use in underwater and above-water environments." Both sheets also say to protect the cured foam from UV by painting.

Kraken Bond technical data sheets SF 401, straw rev. 2 dated 4.9.2026 and gun rev. 1 dated 1.21.2026

What the documents state

WaterContact with water, and "does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life above or below the waterline" (straw sheet); underwater and above-water use, with no statement about fish or plants (gun sheet). Neither names a testTDS
UV"UV resistant" in the gun sheet heading, and "cured foam will discolor when exposed to UV light" with a paint-or-coat instruction in the notes of both. The first is a relative claim about the black pigment and the second is about long-term exposure; no exposure test, method or duration is printed for eitherTDS
ExpansionThe straw sheet prints "High Expansion" in the table and "Low Expansion" in a feature bulletStraw TDS rev. 2
Fire classB3 to DIN 4102-1 (straw); "contains a fire-retardant additive"TDS

TYTAN Professional Black Spray Foam

Black RV and roof foam with both UL 723 indices on a dated sheet, which calls the seal UV protected and asks for a coating against UV rays outdoors; no exposure test behind either.

Gun, 24 oz Black

The claim, in the seller's words

"UV Resistant, Waterproof Foam for RV, Automotive, Pond, Waterfall & Landscape."

What the documents state

FireUL 723 (ASTM E84) flame spread 15, smoke developed 10; DIN 4102 class B3 and EN 13501-1 class F on the same sheetTDS 24.02.2026
Yield1,450 ft of 1/2 in bead from the 24 oz can, 80 to 110 percent post-expansionTDS 24.02.2026
UVThe sheet sells a seal protected from UV exposure and then tells you to coat the cured foam against UV raysTDS 24.02.2026

Desk note

Sold for RV roofs and undercarriages, and one of two black foams here, with DAP, whose sheet prints a complete surface-burning result, UL 723 to ASTM E84 at flame spread 15 and smoke developed 10. The same table prints DIN 4102 class B3 and EN 13501-1 class F, the bottom class of each, from other test systems. On sunlight the sheet makes two claims, as three other black foam sheets in this set do: the selling copy promises a watertight seal protected from UV exposure, and the application notes say the cured foam should be secured against UV rays with a coating. The first is a relative claim about the pigment and the second is about long-term exposure; neither comes with an exposure test, and the second is the one to plan around on a roof.

  • No tested thickness or laboratory for the UL 723 result.
  • The sheet promises UV protection in its selling copy and asks for a UV coating in its application notes.

Desk note

One of two black foams here whose sheet prints a US surface-burning result, TYTAN's RV can being the other, and the only one of the eight with an ASTM C518 thermal figure. It is also the one sheet in this set that prints two different UL 723 pairs in one document, 10/15 in the table and 15/25 in the classification mark. Both are within Class A, so the claim holds either way; the inconsistency is still worth a question. Amazon sells it only through a reseller in packs with gloves and a gun, which is why the entry price was $86.79 for three cans on September 7.

  • Two UL 723 pairs on one sheet.
  • No bare-can listing on Amazon; reseller packs only.

Not listed, and why

Questions and answers

Black foam questions, answered

Every answer comes from a maker’s data sheet, safety data sheet or manual, or from the records on this page, and says which.

Ask your own
  1. Is black pond foam safe for reptiles, frogs and vivariums? Buyer question

None of the eight black foam data sheets we read mentions reptiles, amphibians, vivariums or terrariums, so no maker in this set has said yes or no. The animal statements that do exist are about water features: Stanley F903 and DAP Touch ’n Seal Black say their foam is safe for plants and fish, TYTAN’s black foam sheet says "Safe around koi fish," and Kraken Bond’s straw sheet goes furthest, saying the foam "does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life above or below the waterline." None of the four names a test behind its statement, and the Sprayman and Akfix black foam sheets make no animal statement at all.

  2. Can I use regular Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks, or another black foam, instead of Great Stuff Pond & Stone? Buyer question

We hold no document for Great Stuff Pond & Stone, so we cannot compare anything with it, and the documents we hold for regular Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks make no pond or water-feature claim: its safety data sheet gives the identified use as "Polyurethane foam." Among the black foams we track, the sheets that name water features are Kraken Bond’s ("Pond and pool applications" on the straw sheet, "Ponds, pools, and water features" on the gun sheet), Sprayman’s ("Pond, pool and piscine applications"), DAP’s ("Ideal for ponds and waterfalls") and TYTAN’s ("safe for waterfalls and koi ponds"). Stanley’s F903 sheet names landscaping rather than ponds, and Akfix’s 892P sheet names neither. None of these sheets mentions a vivarium or an aquarium.

  3. Does pond foam need to be sealed with silicone before water or animals touch it? Buyer question

None of the eight black foam sheets we read asks for silicone or any other seal before water or animals touch the foam. The coatings they do ask for are against sunlight: Kraken Bond’s straw sheet says "Protect cured foam from UV exposure by painting or coating," the Stanley, Sprayman, Akfix and TYTAN sheets give the same kind of instruction, and DAP says its foam "Will not breakdown or discolor in sunlight." Kraken Bond’s gun sheet says "Cured foam is safe for use in underwater and above-water environments" with no coating condition attached. The only sheet that mentions silicone is TYTAN’s, and only to say the foam does not stick to it: "The foam displays lack of adhesion to polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, silicone and Teflon."

  4. How long after foaming can I run the waterfall or put the animals back? Buyer question

None of the eight black foam sheets we read states a wait before water flows over the foam or animals go back in, so full cure is the nearest figure the makers give: 24 hours on the Kraken Bond, Stanley, Sprayman, Akfix and TYTAN sheets, and "Approx. 1 hour" on DAP’s. Cutting time is shorter, 40 minutes or less on six of the eight sheets and "20-45 min" on Akfix’s, but Kraken Bond’s straw sheet says to "Trim or shape the foam after it has fully cured" and TYTAN recommends finishing work "after full hardening is completed, i.e. after 24 h." Several sheets add that cure depends on temperature and humidity, and DAP asks for "40% relative humidity or greater."

  5. Will waterfall foam hold rocks in place or glue stones to a pond liner? Buyer question

DAP’s and Stanley’s black foam sheets sell the foam as a stone adhesive, and none of the black foam sheets says anything about pond liners. DAP’s Touch ’n Seal Black sheet lists "Stone and block adhesive" and calls the foam "Ideal for bonding stones for landscaping and waterfall/pond applications," and Stanley’s F903 sheet says it "bonds quickly to porous and non-porous rock, stone, cement, wood, and various other materials." None of the eight black foam sheets we read mentions EPDM, rubber or any other liner material, and none prints a bond strength, so how much weight a joint will hold is not documented. TYTAN’s black foam sheet is the one that lists materials the foam will not stick to, among them polyethylene and polypropylene.

  6. Does black foam stick to glass or wet stone? Buyer question

None of the eight black foam sheets we read lists glass among the surfaces the foam sticks to, so there is no maker statement either way. On wet surfaces they split: Kraken Bond’s straw sheet says "Surfaces must be clean, dry" yet "Moistening the surface improves adhesion and curing performance," Stanley’s F903 and Sprayman’s sheets also tell you to moisten the surface, and DAP’s says the "surface must be clean, dry, and free of all foreign material" with no wetting step. None of them describes applying foam under water; Kraken Bond’s gun sheet speaks of underwater use only for cured foam. TYTAN’s sheet names silicone among the materials the foam does not adhere to.

  7. Which black foam says it is safe for fish? From the records

Stanley F903 prints "safe for plants and fishes" in its data sheet, and DAP Touch ’n Seal Black prints "safe for plants and fish" in its sheet and on its page. Kraken Bond's straw sheet says the foam "does not harm aquatic or terrestrial life above or below the waterline"; its gun sheet states underwater use with no statement about fish or plants. TYTAN’s black foam sheet says "Safe around koi fish" and calls the foam safe for "waterfalls and koi ponds". None of the four names a test. Sprayman’s store and sheet both name pond use, and neither makes a fish or plant statement.

  8. Is black foam UV resistant? From the records

The sheets make two different claims. "UV resistant" is a relative claim about the black pigment, and the instruction to paint or cover the cured foam is about long-term exposure outdoors; one foam can hold both, so the two sentences are not a contradiction. What none of the makers publishes is a UV exposure test with a method and a duration, so treat the color as an appearance choice and the coating instruction as the requirement.

  9. Why is a fire rating listed on a landscape foam? From the records

DAP publishes a UL 723 result for its black foam because the same can is sold for RV and HVAC use, and TYTAN publishes one for its black foam because that can is sold for RV and automotive work; they are the two black foams in the set with a US surface-burning figure. DAP's sheet prints two different index pairs, 10/15 and 15/25, both within Class A. TYTAN's prints 15 and 10 for the 24 oz gun can.
