A buyer's question, answered from the records

Can you paint spray foam?

The short answer

Yes, once it has cured. Of the 47 spray foams whose makers say anything about it in our records, 35 call the cured foam paintable and the other 12 tell you to paint, plaster or coat it where it is left in sunlight. Wait for the full cure, which 4 of the 5 ranked kit sheets put at 24 hours. None of the documents names a type of paint.

What the makers mean by paintable

The word on the sheets is paintable, over paintable or can be painted over, and on DuPont’s Great Stuff pages paintable, stainable and sandable. None of the documents names a kind of paint: there is no latex, acrylic, water-based or oil-based paint in them and no primer. The covers they do name are paint, plaster and another suitable coating, Loctite adds stain, and Great Stuff Wide Spray asks for a UV resistant coating.

Trim before you paint. The kit makers put trimming at about 40 minutes and painting after the full cure, so the knife comes first and the paint goes on the finished surface.

How long to wait before painting

The documents tie the paint step to the cure rather than to a number of hours: after the foam is fully cured on the FastCoat sheet, and paintable after curing on the FastCoat manual and the ThermCoat guide. The same documents print a full cure of 24 hours, and 4 of the 5 ranked kits give that figure. Stanley, Sprayman and TYTAN ask for the cover immediately after the foam has fully hardened, which tells you not to leave cured foam exposed rather than to paint it sooner.

BEEST is the one maker with a shorter figure: its official page says FullStop can be trimmed or painted after about 6 hours, while its own quick start guide gives 24 hours for a full cure.

Outdoors, the paint is the protection

Cured polyurethane foam discolors in sunlight, and the sheets that mention it ask for paint, plaster or a coating outdoors. DuPont and HandiFoam do not call their two-component foam paintable and still ask for a coating: the product is not resistant to UV rays, says HandiFoam, and if it is left exposed it should be coated or painted.

Black foam is the one kind whose makers claim the color itself as UV protection. 5 of the 6 black foams we track still ask for paint or a coating once the foam has cured; DAP’s Touch ’n Seal Black is the exception, saying it will not break down or discolor in sunlight.

Two evaluation reports go further than the makers. ICC-ES ESR-3302, which TYTAN cites for its fire block foams, says they must not be used where they are exposed to sunlight or weather, and ESR-3228 for Froth-Pak asks for the foam to be protected from the weather during and after application.

Indoors, paint is not the cover the code asks for

In a room people use, the building code expects foam plastic to sit behind a thermal barrier, most often half-inch gypsum board, and a coat of paint is not that barrier. Paint finishes foam in a shed, a garage or an outdoor seam; in living space it goes on the board in front of the foam.

Asked next

What people ask after this one

What kind of paint will stick to spray foam?

None of the makers’ documents we hold names one. They call the cured foam paintable or ask for paint, plaster or another suitable coating, DuPont adds stain for its Great Stuff cans, and Great Stuff Wide Spray asks for a UV resistant coating.

Is Great Stuff spray foam paintable?

Yes. DuPont’s pages for Great Stuff Gaps & Cracks, PRO Gaps & Cracks, PRO Window & Door, PRO Pestblock and Wide Spray all call the cured foam paintable, stainable and sandable, and the Gaps & Cracks pages add that the skin of cured foam can discolor.

How long after spraying can you paint spray foam?

After the full cure, which 4 of the 5 ranked kit sheets put at 24 hours. BEEST’s official page gives about 6 hours for FullStop, against 24 hours in its own quick start guide.

Can spray foam be left exposed?

Not in sunlight on most of the documents: the makers who mention it ask for paint, plaster or a coating outdoors. Inside a room people use, the code expects it behind a thermal barrier such as half-inch gypsum board.

Is black spray foam UV resistant?

5 of the 6 black foams we track claim UV resistance from the color and still ask for paint or a coating once the foam has cured. DAP’s Touch ’n Seal Black says it will not break down or discolor in sunlight.

Where the evidence comes from

From the job to the finished wall

Plan the job in five questions

  1. Where are you insulating?

A garage ceiling, a rim joist and a van wall each ask for a different foam, thickness and cover. Start with the job.

  2. What will it cost?

Board feet are the area times the thickness. Price the kits that cover them against hiring the job out.

  3. What do you need?

A kit, the gun and cleaner it works with, something to cover what stays clean, and the gear you wear.

  4. How do you do it?

Check the temperature, prepare the surface, spray in passes and cover the foam where people live.

  5. How long does it take?

The sheets give a tack-free time in minutes and a full cure in hours; only some say when people can go back in.
