3 of four things confirmed

These are the four things we could check for a fire block can, and nothing else. Not a performance score: nothing on this page was applied or tested by us. How the fire block page is ordered.

  • Brand data sheeta technical data sheet is published by the brand
  • Claim checkableThe dated gun sheet gives a full UL 723 pair, the yield and the working range for the 24 oz can, and ICC-ES ESR-3302 evaluates this foam for keeping wood fireblocking intact where it is penetrated, on NFPA 286 room-corner test reports. That is a fireblocking result with a report number that can be looked up, within the report’s limits: Type V-B and non-rated residential construction, at most 18 sq in of exposed foam per sq ft of wall, and not a firestop.

Research summary, not a hands-on test. Product claims on this page are attributed to the sources and dates shown. Before use, read the exact product label, the current safety data sheet and the application instructions, and confirm ventilation, protective equipment, occupant isolation and re-entry or reoccupancy conditions. A surface-burning classification alone does not establish approval to leave foam exposed or to use it in a particular assembly.

Our reading

The cheapest single fire block can here is the 12 oz straw can, and it has a dated sheet of its own beside the 24 oz gun can’s. Both print the full UL 723 result to ASTM E84, flame spread 15 and smoke developed 10; the gun can yields 1,450 ft of half-inch bead and the straw can 389 ft. The fireblocking claim has a report behind it: ICC-ES ESR-3302, named on the straw sheet, evaluates the foam under AC546 for keeping wood fireblocking intact where pipes and wires pass through it, on NFPA 286 room-corner tests. That is what this page asks of a fire block can. Read its limits with it: Type V-B construction under the IBC and non-rated construction under the IRC, at most 18 sq in of exposed foam per square foot of wall, and not a firestop, which both sheets also say. The same tables print DIN 4102 class B3 and EN 13501-1 class F, the bottom class of each, from other test systems. TYTAN gives the gun can an upper limit of 113 F on its sheet and 100 F on its flyer. The orange color is there so an inspector can recognize the can. It identifies the product; it is not a function, a test or an approval.

Still open

  • No tested thickness or laboratory for the UL 723 result.
  • ESR-3302 cites NFPA 286 test reports without printing their results.
  • The gun can’s upper temperature limit is 113 F on its sheet and 100 F on TYTAN’s flyer.

Jobs where a can from this category is part of the answer

These pages name the category rather than this particular can. Each one sets out the constraint that decides the product for that assembly, the code section that applies, a worked quantity example, and where foam is the wrong answer.

  • Attics As fire block foam. Where a penetration between floors is a fireblocking location, the orange can needs a real surface-burning result; the fire block page sorts the claims.
  • Garages As fire block foam. Penetrations through the separation wall are where a fireblocking claim is actually asked for.

TYTAN Professional has a right of reply

Everything on this page is a dated reading of documents that can change. If you make or sell this product, or you have read something here that is wrong, send the document. Every submission is read against the record; where it changes the record, the change is dated on the page, and where it does not, the reply says why. A submission cannot buy a position or remove a finding the documents still support, and what moves a record is written down.
