Akfix ThermCoat 24-Pack Review

ThermCoat comes from Akfix, a polyurethane foam manufacturer with a public catalog going back two decades, and it is Class A fire rated on a sheet that prints ASTM E84 and UL 723 at 2 inches with both indices, with a fire-rated application and safety guide beside it. The same sheet publishes a density, 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 to ASTM D1622, labeled specific gravity on the sheet but printed in lb/ft3, a density unit, which only TYTAN among the numbered kits also publishes and which is one of the three conditions the residential code sets for foam left exposed at a rim joist. What the sheet does not carry is a date or a revision.

Research summary, not a hands-on test. Product claims on this page are attributed to the sources and dates shown. Before use, read the exact product label, the current safety data sheet and the application instructions, and confirm ventilation, protective equipment, occupant isolation and re-entry or reoccupancy conditions. A surface-burning classification alone does not establish approval to leave foam exposed or to use it in a particular assembly. Included protective items may not meet every requirement for your job; select ventilation and protective equipment from the exact product instructions and the exposure conditions, not from what the box contains.

What to check first

This sheet prints a density, which almost nothing in this category does: a specific gravity of 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 pounds per cubic foot under ASTM D1622. Two kits here print one, this and TYTAN. The FastCoat, SprayCoat and SuperCoat sheets share several lines with this one and carry no density line of their own; the figure stays with this sheet. The sheet labels it specific gravity and prints it in lb/ft3, which is a density unit. It is one of the three conditions the residential code sets for spray foam left exposed at a rim joist. Credit where it is due.

The same sheet needs one question answered before the fire claim can be relied on. Its properties table states a fire class of B3 under DIN 4102-1, the lowest class of that German standard, a few lines above an ASTM E84 note giving Class A with both indices at 2 inches. The likeliest explanation is a line carried over from a European sheet, and we have asked the manufacturer which applies to the product sold here.

Buy by the number on the box. The listing says 27.1 oz a can; the data sheet’s packaging table says 28.7 oz. Ask which applies to the cans shipping now.

Every point, and the fact behind it
Technical data sheet 6 / 12 A USA data sheet is published but carries no date or revision.
Safety data sheet 5 / 6 Not on the brand store, and not on akfix.com either: the corporate product page publishes a technical data sheet, a brochure and the group catalog, and no safety data sheet. Akfix customer support sent one when our desk asked, and it matched the product, so this scores one point below a published sheet.
Fire evidence 12 / 12 ASTM E84 and UL 723 at 2 inches with both indices. The same sheet also states a DIN 4102-1 class of B3, which is a different test system rather than a contradiction; we have asked which result applies to the pack sold here.
Net contents per can 2 / 4 The listing says 27.1 oz a can and the sheet says 28.7 oz.
Yield stated with its conditions 4 / 4 Yield 20 board feet at 1 inch, applied from about 16 inches.
R-value, published and how high 4 / 4 R-11.32 at 2 inches in the guide, consistent with 5.66 an inch: 3 for the publication, 1 for the magnitude.
Density published 4 / 4 Specific gravity 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 under ASTM D1622, printed on this sheet. The sheet’s label is specific gravity, which has no unit; lb/ft3 is a density unit and ASTM D1622 is the density test for rigid cellular plastics, so the line is read as a density. It sits inside the 0.5 to 2.0 lb/ft3 the rim-joist exception needs, as the maker’s figure for cured foam rather than an installed density anyone has verified. It is printed on this sheet alone: the FastCoat, SprayCoat and SuperCoat sheets carry no density line and do not score it. DAP Wall & Cavity prints one of its own, to the same method, and is a can rather than a kit so it is not scored here.
Maker identity 3 / 4 One test of the two. akfix.com is a corporate site, separate from the shop, and it publishes this product’s own technical data sheet, a brochure and the group catalog. What is missing is the other half: no legal entity is named on the product’s document. The US store publishes a trade name, a phone and an address.
Equipment in the box 5 / 5 Gun, cleaner and protective equipment in the set.
Material in the pack 4 / 4 24 cans at the listing figure of 27.1 oz, 650.4 oz of product.

Why this confidence level · editorial opinion, not a test result

The documents are there and we have asked the seller something we have not had an answer to. This sheet publishes a density, 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 under ASTM D1622, labeled specific gravity on the sheet and read here as a density because lb/ft3 is a density unit. It is one of the three conditions the residential code sets for foam left exposed at a rim joist, and it is the maker’s figure for cured foam rather than an installed density anyone has verified. The FastCoat, SprayCoat and SuperCoat sheets share several lines with this one and carry no density line of their own, so the figure stays with this sheet. That is a real advantage and we have said so. It sits beside a real question. The same properties table states a fire class of B3 under DIN 4102-1, the lowest class of that standard, a few lines above an ASTM E84 Class A note. The likeliest explanation is a legacy line from a European sheet, and we have asked the manufacturer which applies to the product sold here. On documents, akfix.com does what few brands here do: it publishes this product’s own technical sheet, a brochure and the group catalog on a corporate site rather than only in the shop. What it does not publish anywhere is a safety data sheet; customer support sent one when we asked.

Scored on . The score is what the documents support; the confidence level is our view of that evidence and never changes the arithmetic. How the rating is built · All 13 scored side by side.

How the manufacturer describes it

The following is compiled from the manufacturer’s own statements on its USA data sheet, its official store and its marketplace listings. It is presented as the brand describes the product. We have not tested it and we do not adopt these claims.

  • A one-component, moisture-cured closed-cell polyurethane foam for walls, roofs, attics, basements, rim joists, ducts and metal buildings, applied with an applicator gun.
  • Two nozzles per can, nozzle A for walls and nozzle B for ceilings, with a recommended 2-inch build in two 1-inch layers.
  • A stated yield of 20 board feet at 1 inch, sprayed from about 16 inches at normal speed.
  • R-5.66 per inch, stated as R-11.32 at 2 inches in the application guide, with a 24-hour full cure and a 40-minute cutting time.
  • Application and can temperature of 41 to 86 F, optimal 68 F. The sheet notes that lower temperatures reduce yield and slow cure.
  • Indoor use with ventilation; outdoor use with a coating or covering against UV and moisture.

The FastCoat, SprayCoat, ThermCoat and SuperCoat documents state the same yield basis of 20 board feet at 1 inch, the same nozzle A for walls and nozzle B for ceilings, the same 1-inch layer advice with water misting between coats, and the same 24-hour cure with a 40-minute cutting time. The SprayCoat and ThermCoat data sheets also carry the same packaging line, 28.7 oz at a gross 2.05 lb with 12 to a box. We record that pattern and draw no conclusion from it: none of the four states a relationship with the others, and we have not established who manufactures any of them.

What the differences mean

Two fire classes on one sheet

The technical properties table states "Fire Class of the Cured Foam: B3 (DIN 4102-1)". Lower on the same page a note states that the product was tested to ASTM E84 and UL 723 at a 2-inch thickness and achieved Class A with a flame spread index of 15 or less and a smoke developed index of 40 or less.

Why it matters. B3 is the lowest class in DIN 4102-1, a German reaction-to-fire test. Class A is a US surface-burning result under ASTM E84 or UL 723. They come from two different test systems and one foam can hold both, so the two lines are not a contradiction. What the sheet does not say is which packs and which thickness each result applies to, and the maker has been asked; until it answers, the E84 line stands on its own terms and the B3 line on its.

The one sheet in the family that prints the density

Specific gravity 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 under ASTM D1622. It is the only one of the four coat sheets that carries the row; the other three share several lines with it and carry no density line, and the figure is not transferred to them. DAP Wall & Cavity, a can rather than a kit, prints a core density of 1.4 pcf to the same standard.

Why it matters. IRC R316.5.11 lets spray foam at sill plates, headers and the perimeter joist space go without a thermal barrier when three conditions are met: thickness of 3-1/4 inches or less, density of 0.5 to 2.0 lb/ft3, and a Class A surface-burning result. This sheet documents the middle condition for this product only. It is the manufacturer’s figure for cured foam rather than an as-installed density we verified.

The listing and the data sheet give two different can sizes

The Amazon title says 24 x 27.1 oz. The data sheet packaging table says 28.7 oz at a gross 2.05 lb, 12 to a box, which is the same line the Sprayman sheet carries.

Why it matters. Net contents is the first number any pack-to-document match needs. Two brands carrying the same packaging line with the same retail mismatch is a pattern, and it is recorded in our shared-sheet note without naming a manufacturer, because none is established.

An undated data sheet

The USA data sheet carries no issue date and no revision.

Why it matters. There is nothing on the sheet to show which version of it you are holding. A date and a revision would fix this in one edit.

Official store and Walmart match to the cent

On September 7, 2026 the 24-can set was 329.99 dollars on akfixstore.com and in the Walmart variant family, and the 24-can foam-only box was 299.99 on both. Every size both channels list matches except the two-can box, 36.99 against 36.39. The Amazon price did not parse on the day and is not recorded.

Why it matters. Channel choice is about stock and returns rather than price. Walmart lists can-only boxes at every size alongside the sets.

Product overview

Akfix, a polyurethane foam manufacturer with a public catalog going back two decades, markets ThermCoat for both DIY and professional applications and pairs its 24-can kit with a gun and cleaner. Its fire-rated data sheet prints ASTM E84 and UL 723 at 2 inches with both indices, and a fire-rated application and safety guide sits beside it.

Manufacturer-stated features

  • Closed-cell; R-5.66 per inch, stated as R-11.32 at 2 inches - manufacturer claim
  • Class A fire rated to ASTM E84 and UL 723 at 2 inches, both indices - manufacturer
  • 480 sq ft coverage (24-pack) - theoretical
  • From a foam manufacturer with a public catalog going back two decades
  • Gun and cleaner included

Overview synthesized from the brand’s official page and the Amazon listing. Specifications are manufacturer claims, not independently verified.

The 24-pack claims 480 board feet - roughly a small garage or shed at ~1 inch. Reviews call coverage-for-price modest, so add a margin of extra cans.

94%

32 of the 34 reviews carry the platform’s verified-purchase label, almost all of them. The pool is small enough that a handful of new reviews would move the 4.65 noticeably.

A shop’s own star rating is the number its seller controls most completely. This is how much of it the review platform could match to a real order placed in that shop. Verified means the platform matched the review to an order in that shop. Unverified does not mean false: it can be a buyer who ordered on a marketplace, a review imported from another platform, or one collected outside the shop’s checkout. Which of those applies is not published, so a reader cannot tell. Counted one page at a time on September 12, 2026.

Positive on performance and tool value, with dud cans and third-party seller support the recurring gripes.

Stands out: Buyers value keeping the reusable gun and rebuying only cans as needed.

Buyers praise

  • Reusable gun means cans-only reorders later
  • Goes a long way when instructions are followed
  • Odor and adhesion to metal and wood better than expected

Buyers complain

  • Cans that would not dispense, especially after storage
  • A third-party seller accused of ghosting replacement requests
  • Coverage-for-price seen as modest

Buyer tip: Change nozzle tips per can and run cleaner every few cans to keep flow steady.

Questions and answers

Questions about Akfix ThermCoat 24-Pack

Answered from this product’s documents and listings, the same records the rest of this page is built from.

Ask your own
  1. Can I reuse the Akfix gun for later cans? From the records

Yes - buyers value keeping the reusable gun and rebuying only cans. Change tips per can and run cleaner every few cans to keep flow steady.

  2. Where should I buy ThermCoat? From the records

Akfix now runs its own online store (akfixstore.com), so you can buy direct or on a marketplace. Buying direct helps with manufacturer support; Amazon’s own returns are a safety net, since some third-party marketplace sellers have drawn support complaints.

  3. Does it cover as much as claimed? From the records

Reviews call coverage-for-price modest against the claimed 480 board feet (24-pack), so add a margin of extra cans.

Jobs where this kit is one of the products we list

Each of these pages sets out the constraint that decides the product for that assembly, the code section that applies, and a worked quantity example.

  • Metal Buildings Names metal buildings in its own list of uses, alongside walls, roofs, attics, basements, rim joists and ducts.
  • Pole Barns Names metal buildings in its own list of uses. A 24-can kit claims 480 board feet, which is a patch of one barn rather than a barn, so count the kits before you count on them.

Akfix has a right of reply

Everything on this page is a dated reading of documents that can change. If you make or sell this product, or you have read something here that is wrong, send the document. Every submission is read against the record; where it changes the record, the change is dated on the page, and where it does not, the reply says why. A submission cannot buy a position or remove a finding the documents still support, and what moves a record is written down.
