Kraken Bond vs Akfix: FastCoat and ThermCoat Compared

The two kits at the top of our order are the same box on paper: 24 cans, 480 board feet claimed at 1 inch, 650.4 net ounces. On the latest readings ThermCoat was the cheaper of the two at $329.99 against $359.99, and the rest of the distance between them is documents and whose reviews can be traced to a purchase.

The short answer

Which one, and when neither

  1. FastCoat, if the documents and the traceable reviews decide it

Kraken Bond publishes the data sheet with a date and a revision, the safety data sheet and the user manual on its own site, and nothing on the sheet argues with anything else on it. On that store, 275 of the 283 reviews the widget serves are tied to an order in the shop, 97%, at a 4.66 average. That is the fuller record on both halves, and it is why FastCoat sits #1 at 86.7 against #2 at 83.7.

  2. ThermCoat, if the marketplace feedback decides it

The Amazon listing we track for ThermCoat carries 4.2 from 585 ratings against 4 from 429 for FastCoat, with 12% one star against 13%. Its own store base is small by comparison, 34 reviews against 283, and it is almost as clean: 32 of them tied to an order, 94%, at a 4.65 average.

  3. Neither, if the 480 board feet is your material takeoff

Both numbers are maker claims at 1 inch under stated conditions, not yield measured on your wall, and both kits are the same 650.4 ounces of foam. Substrate temperature, pass thickness, overlap and trimming decide what you actually get. Both makers state a Class A result and the limits are the same band for both, flame spread 0 to 25 and smoke developed 0 to 450, so read the label and the local code rather than ranking one fire statement above the other.

Density Product-specific figure published This row No density or specific gravity on this sheet. The 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 under ASTM D1622 in this set is printed on the Akfix ThermCoat sheet only and is not transferred here: the two sheets share the conductivity, R-value, compression and yield lines, and this one prints a skin time of 5 plus or minus 2 minutes under ASTM C1620 where the Akfix sheet prints a tack-free time of 4, and nothing from either maker says the two cans hold one formulation. Read 2026-09-14.Research criterion B5 Specific gravity 0.94 plus or minus 0.06 lb/ft3 under ASTM D1622, printed on this sheet. The sheet’s label is specific gravity, which has no unit; lb/ft3 is a density unit and ASTM D1622 is the density test for rigid cellular plastics, so the line is read as a density. It sits inside the 0.5 to 2.0 lb/ft3 the rim-joist exception needs, as the maker’s figure for cured foam rather than an installed density anyone has verified. It is printed on this sheet alone: the FastCoat, SprayCoat and SuperCoat sheets carry no density line and do not score it. DAP Wall & Cavity prints one of its own, to the same method, and is a can rather than a kit so it is not scored here.Research criterion B5

What would change this

The missing piece, named

  • An Akfix sheet that resolves the DIN 4102-1 B3 line beside its US ASTM E84 statement would remove ThermCoat’s largest paperwork question, which is the one row where its record is marked contested rather than published.
  • A ThermCoat safety data sheet published on a public channel would close the other. The copy we hold came from customer support, and neither akfix.com nor the US store publishes one.
  • A density figure on the FastCoat sheet would evidence the second condition of the rim joist exception, the single open question on its own record.

Asked about this pair

Questions people type, answered from the records

Which is cheaper, FastCoat or ThermCoat?

On the latest readings, FastCoat at $359.99 at the Kraken Bond store against ThermCoat at $329.99 at the Akfix store, both read on October 29, 2026. ThermCoat was $30.00 less for the same 24-can kit, which is $0.55 an ounce for FastCoat against $0.51 for ThermCoat. On the September 7, 2026 prices the rubric scores, ThermCoat was the cheaper, before Kraken Bond cut its store price. Prices here are dated snapshots, so confirm the seller before you pay.

Do FastCoat and ThermCoat claim the same coverage?

Yes. Both state 480 board feet at 1 inch for the 24-can kit, from the same 650.4 net ounces of foam. That is a published claim under the maker’s stated conditions, not a promise of installed yield on a given job.

What do the reviews on the makers’ own stores show?

Read as a pair rather than an average, on September 12, 2026: krakenbond.net served 283 reviews for FastCoat with 275 of them tied to an order in that shop, 97%, at 4.66; akfixstore.com served 34 for ThermCoat with 32 tied to an order, 94%, at 4.65. Verified there means the review platform could match the review to a purchase in that same shop. It says nothing about the Amazon listings, where no such breakdown is published to anyone.

Are both of them Class A?

Both state a Class A result to ASTM E84 and UL 723 at a stated thickness, and Class A is a band rather than a score: flame spread 0 to 25 and smoke developed 0 to 450. We have seen the fire test report behind each one; neither maker publishes it, so neither do we. A class statement is not an approval for your assembly, which is a question for the building official.

What else do Kraken Bond and Akfix sell in spray foam?

Kraken Bond also sells a pest block foam in straw and gun cans, a gap and crack filler, a window and door foam, a fire block foam, a black landscape foam and a wide spray can, each with its own record on this site, plus Xtreme Pro window and door and fire block gun cans, and a fence post foam that was sold out, which this site does not track. Akfix sells a pest barrier foam, a gap filler in straw and gun cans, a fire block foam and a black foam, each with its own record here; its US store listed no window and door foam, no wide spray can and no fence post foam when we read both stores on October 18, 2026. Neither brand’s adhesive foams, silicones and glues are tracked here.

How this page is built

Nothing here was sprayed by us

This comparison reads what each maker publishes and what the listings show; it is not a hands-on test. Every figure in the tables comes from the product records behind the full record pages, with the document it came from and the date we read it, and it changes on this page the day a record is re-read. A side is marked ahead only when both were measured the same way, or when only one maker put the figure in writing. The rules behind the order on the category pages are in the methodology.
