2 of four things confirmed

These are the four things we could check for a pest block can, and nothing else. Not a performance score: nothing on this page was applied or tested by us. How the pest block page is ordered.

  • Brand data sheeta technical data sheet is published by the brand, without a date or revision on it
  • Claim checkableThe store says the pesticide is EPA-registered but names neither the registration number nor the active ingredient, so there is nothing a buyer can look up. Naming the ingredient is what this mark asks for.

Research summary, not a hands-on test. Product claims on this page are attributed to the sources and dates shown. Before use, read the exact product label, the current safety data sheet and the application instructions, and confirm ventilation, protective equipment, occupant isolation and re-entry or reoccupancy conditions. A surface-burning classification alone does not establish approval to leave foam exposed or to use it in a particular assembly.

The claim, in the seller's words

The brand store calls it "powered by an EPA-registered pesticide" and a "rodent sealant" that keeps "mice, rats, birds, bats, ants, and roaches" out, and lists it as "Professional Grade" for contractors.

Where the line runs

Which side of the pesticide line this can's words fall on

Under 40 CFR 152.25(a), the exemption covers a pesticide that protects the treated article itself, which here is the foam. A can that says it keeps animals from chewing the foam needs no registration number of its own. A can that says it keeps animals out of your building has made a different claim, about the premises rather than the product, and that one the exemption does not cover.

Claims to protect the building

keeps pests like mice, rats, birds, bats, ants, and roaches where they belong: out

Six animals, kept out of a house. Nothing in that sentence is about protecting the foam. The maker's own data sheet, which serves this can and the straw can, opens with the exempt version instead: the pesticide "protects the foam from attack by mice, birds, bats and tree squirrels." The store took the claim further than the sheet does.

This is a reading of the maker's own words and nothing else. We have not tested this can, no maker in this category names its active ingredient, and the exemption also turns on that ingredient being registered for this use, which is the part nobody publishes. So this does not say a can is unlawful and we are in no position to say so. Every pest can in our set, side by side.

Working rangeThe sheet gives two ranges: ambient and surface 23 to 86 F, can and applicator 41 to 86 F. The store gives one figure, 41 to 86 F, which is the can range rather than the ambient range. Cured foam -40 to 176 F on bothTDS, undated, against the brand store

Our reading

The gun version of the Pest Blocker, and the only pest can in this set sold as a bare can and as a set with the gun and cleaner in the same listing. On September 9 the store priced it at $19.99 for one can and $44.95 for the set, which is the clearest statement on this page of what the tool costs on top of the foam. Its pest claim goes further than the straw version: that one says the foam contains a pesticide, this one says it keeps six named animals out. Neither names the ingredient, and the further claim is the one that would need a registration number behind it.

Still open

  • EPA registration number and active ingredient published nowhere, including on the sheet; we have not seen the can label.
  • No Amazon listing matched: the 24 oz Sprayman listings we found carry a pond and landscape title.
  • The sheet carries no date or revision.
  • The store prints the can temperature range as the application range, which is 18 degrees narrower at the cold end than the sheet allows.

Jobs where a can from this category is part of the answer

These pages name the category rather than this particular can. Each one sets out the constraint that decides the product for that assembly, the code section that applies, a worked quantity example, and where foam is the wrong answer.

  • Attics As gaps and cracks foam. Top plates, wire holes, plumbing chases and the hatch perimeter are gap-filler work; Loctite Tite Foam and Kraken Bond Gaps & Cracks carry the clearest sheets.
  • Rim joists As gaps and cracks foam. For the sill-to-foundation joint and the wire and pipe holes through the rim, before the surface foam goes on.
  • Crawl spaces As pest block foam. Crawl spaces are where pest claims are sold hardest; the page explains why foam alone is not a rodent barrier and what the pesticide claims do not publish.
  • Sheds As pest block foam. Sheds get mice. The page explains what the pest claims do and do not publish, and why hardware cloth comes first. As gaps and cracks foam. Sheds leak at the sill and the corners; the sealant goes on first.
  • Metal Buildings As gaps and cracks foam. Every screw line, conduit, hydrant and vent through a steel skin is an air path. Sealing those is cheap and it is the part of the job that pays back fastest.
  • Pole Barns As gaps and cracks foam. Every screw line, hydrant, conduit and vent through the skin is an air path, and in a barn the eave and the sliding door jambs are the big ones. Sealing those is cheap and it pays back fastest.
  • Sound Control As gaps and cracks foam. The part of this job that reliably works. Outlet boxes on a shared wall, the gap where a pipe or duct crosses between rooms, the perimeter of a partition at the top plate. Cheap, checkable, and it removes the paths that make an assembly rating meaningless.

Sprayman has a right of reply

Everything on this page is a dated reading of documents that can change. If you make or sell this product, or you have read something here that is wrong, send the document. Every submission is read against the record; where it changes the record, the change is dated on the page, and where it does not, the reply says why. A submission cannot buy a position or remove a finding the documents still support, and what moves a record is written down.
