A buyer's question, answered from the records

How much does spray foam insulation cost?

The short answer

For the foam alone, a one-component 24-can kit claiming 480 board feet cost $314.99 to $389.95 across the 7 we could price in stock, which is $0.66 to $0.81 per claimed board foot. A board foot is one square foot at one inch thick, so 1,000 square feet at 1 inch is 3 kits at the makers’ claims, $944.97 to $1,169.85, before any allowance for waste.

What the records show

One-component kits: the price of the kit and of each claimed board foot

Each price is the lowest in-stock price the price file holds for that kit, with the seller and the day it was read. The board feet are the maker’s own claim at 1 inch.

Two-component closed-cell systems: the price per stated square foot

Read from each system’s record on September 7, 2026. A stated square foot at 1 inch is a board foot, and these are the only yields here whose basis the maker defines.

What a claimed board foot is worth

Every one-component kit in the table states its yield as board feet at 1 inch, and almost all of them land on the same 20 board feet a can. That figure is the maker’s, under the maker’s conditions, and none of them defines how it was measured. Substrate temperature, the thickness of each pass, overlap and trimming all take something off it, so treat the kit count above as the least you will need rather than the most.

The two-component systems are the other way round: dearer per unit, at $1.57 per stated square foot for the one we could buy in stock, but their yield is a figure the maker defines, and they go on far faster on a job of any size.

Which two-component systems you could actually buy

5 of the 7 closed-cell canister offers in our records were out of stock when read on September 7, 2026, and they include the cheapest per stated unit. The one in stock at that reading was Froth-Pak 630 at $989.00 for 630 square feet at 1 inch, so 1,000 square feet at 1 inch takes 2 kits, $1,978.00.

What a contractor charges

We hold no installed quotes, so this page does not print a contractor price. An installed price covers labor, the rig, the protective equipment and a job minimum, and it varies with the region and the job. The DIY against pro calculator on this site sets a foam-only estimate beside a broad installed range and states the assumptions behind both; quotes for your own job are the only figures that settle it.

What people ask after this one

How many spray foam kits do I need?

Multiply the area by the thickness in inches to get board feet, then divide by the kit’s claim. At the 480 board feet a 24-can kit claims, 1,000 square feet at 1 inch takes 3 kits. The claim is the maker’s, so allow for waste on top of it.

Is DIY spray foam cheaper than hiring a contractor?

For the foam alone, 1,000 square feet at 1 inch came to $944.97 to $1,169.85 in one-component kits on our latest readings. We hold no contractor quotes to set beside that, and an installed price includes labor, equipment and a minimum charge, so the honest comparison is that figure against quotes for your own job.

Why do two-component kits cost more per board foot?

On paper they do: $1.57 per stated square foot for the Froth-Pak 630 we could buy, against $0.66 to $0.81 per claimed board foot for the one-component kits. The difference is what the number means. The two-component yield is defined by the maker; the one-component claim is not, and those kits are slower to apply on anything large.

Are these prices current?

They are dated snapshots. Each row prints the seller and the day it was read; the one-component kit prices are refreshed every two days, and the two-component offers were read on September 7, 2026. Confirm the price with the seller before you pay.

Where the evidence comes from

From the job to the finished wall

Plan the job in five questions

  1. Where are you insulating?

A garage ceiling, a rim joist and a van wall each ask for a different foam, thickness and cover. Start with the job.

  2. What will it cost?

Board feet are the area times the thickness. Price the kits that cover them against hiring the job out.

  3. What do you need?

A kit, the gun and cleaner it works with, something to cover what stays clean, and the gear you wear.

  4. How do you do it?

Check the temperature, prepare the surface, spray in passes and cover the foam where people live.

  5. How long does it take?

The sheets give a tack-free time in minutes and a full cure in hours; only some say when people can go back in.
