Best Spray Foam Value

Value needs two published numbers: a price and an amount. This page divides one by the other across every product where both exist, keeps the bundles apart from the foam-only packs, and says plainly what the denominator is worth.

Every figure here is cost per claimed unit. Our file holds no independent field-yield test for any of these products, so the denominator is what the seller says a kit produces under its own stated conditions, not what it produced on a job. Read the numbers as a way to compare like with like, not as a promise. Our coverage page sets out which of those claims are documented and which are listing text.

The single-can kits are cheaper per claimed board foot than the canister systems, by roughly half.

$0.62 to $0.81 against $1.33 to $2.04. Most of the category says the opposite. What a canister buys at scale is not a lower price: it is a yield figure the maker defines in print, a far faster application, and one setup instead of two dozen cans.

Ranked single-can kits

Cost per claimed board foot

The cheapest pack we hold a price for, against the board-foot figure the seller states for that same pack. A foam-only pack and a pack with a gun in it are separate lists, because one of them includes a tool that costs $15 to $56 on its own.

Canister and hose systems

Cost per stated unit, closed cell and open cell kept apart

Open cell and closed cell are not alternatives to each other, so they are not ranked against each other. A cheaper number in the second table does not beat a more expensive one in the first.

3 of the 8 systems are missing from these tables, and the reasons are worth knowing: a listing that prices a multi-kit pack does not divide by one kit yield, a listing with no price cannot be divided at all, and a family that states a range of yields against one price has not given you a pair. Each record on the canister page says which case it is.

Foam sealants

Price per ounce, the one unit the whole shelf shares

Board feet do not apply to a gap filler and most sealant makers publish no yield at all, so the comparison that survives is what an ounce of product costs. Cheapest bare pack per family, never a bundle with a gun in it.

A cheap ounce is not a cheap job. These products are not substitutes for one another: a window foam and a fire block can sit ten cents apart per ounce and answer completely different questions. Price belongs at the end of the decision, after a product has passed the test its own category sets, which is what the sealant pages are for.

35 of the 43 records have a bare pack with a price we trust. 24 listing rows in the snapshot carry a price we will not publish: 3 are out of line with the rest of their own pack ladder, where a larger pack of the same can costs the same as a smaller one or less, and 21 were read while a different pack was selected on the listing. Both kinds are withheld everywhere on this site rather than printed.

Before you use any of it

Three things that move value more than the price does

What is in the box

A gun is $15 to $56 on its own, a cleaner is another can, and some kits include gloves and glasses. A foam-only pack is the right buy on your second kit and the wrong one on your first. The tables above label every price as one or the other.

What the denominator is worth

Two of the four canister makers print what their yield figure rests on, in their own different words: DuPont calls it a theoretical yield calculated in laboratory conditions, HandiFoam bases its on free-rise density and warns that packing into a cavity lowers it. No single-can maker publishes any basis at all. Cost per claimed board foot compares claims, and the claims are not equally good. The coverage page ranks them on that.

What buyers report

The most common complaint across every brand in the set, at every rating level, is that the material ran out well before the claimed area was covered. If that is right, every figure on this page understates the real cost. The buyer reports set out what was read and how.

Questions

Value, answered from the records above

What is the cheapest spray foam per board foot?

On the figures the sellers publish, the single-can kits are, at $0.62 to $0.81 a claimed board foot against $1.33 to $2.04 for the closed-cell canister kits. That is the opposite of what the category usually says, and it comes with a large caveat: the can kits' denominator is a number no maker measures or defines, while two of the four canister makers print that theirs is a laboratory figure. Cheaper per claimed unit is not the same as cheaper per delivered unit.

Why is the same kit a different price with and without a gun?

Because they are different purchases. Most kits sell a foam-only pack for people who already own a gun and a kit pack that adds the gun, a cleaner and sometimes gloves and glasses. Comparing a bundle price against a foam-only price makes the bundle look expensive and tells you nothing. The table below says which one each figure is.

Is a bigger pack always cheaper per ounce?

Usually, and the exceptions are worth knowing. 24 listing rows in this snapshot carry a price we will not publish. 3 of them are the wrong half of a pair where a larger pack of the same can costs the same as a smaller one or less, which is a marketplace artefact rather than a deal. Which half is wrong is decided by the rest of that product's prices, so a single can listed at a 12-pack's price is withheld and the 12-pack is not. The other 21 were read while the listing had a different pack selected, which is our own collection error rather than the seller's: one 12 oz can was carrying the price of a 48-pack. All of them are withheld from every figure on this site, because a twelve-pack priced like one can would win every comparison here.

Does the cheapest product per ounce give the best result?

No, and the site does not order anything by price alone. Price per ounce compares what you are sold, not what it does. A gap filler and a wide-spray can both hold twelve ounces and are not alternatives; a fire block can and a black landscape can are the same base foam with different claims and different evidence. Use price to break a tie between products that already pass the same category test.

Prices are a dated snapshot and they move. Every figure is divided from two published numbers, and where either is missing the product is absent rather than estimated. Prices are snapshots, each dated where it appears, not live figures, so check the seller before you pay.
